This complex white field blend wows the senses with its bright, refreshing nose and palate. Aromatics of gravenstein apple and wet slate merge with hints of white pepper and pineapple. Bracing, mouthwatering acidity bursts on the palate, with flavors of grapefruit, lemon-lime zest, and kiwi. Traces of fine herbs, white nectarine, and a mineral essence emerge on the finish.
Grüner Veltliner is native to Austria. In the area around Vienna, it is often part of a field blend called Gemischter Satz [mixed set]. Bill’s grandfather, also an Austrian native, came to California in the 1890s and worked with his brothers in vineyards in Napa County. As an homage to him, we planted a field blend of 80% Grüner Veltliner with other Austrian, German, and Hungarian varieties, on the steep north slope of our hill. This wine is our first harvest from these vines. The mix of grapes was whole cluster pressed. The juice was fermented and aged ten months in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels.
