This delicious wine opens with deep, rich aromas of dark plum and berry pie à al mode. The opulent entry flows into a texture laced with brown baking spices, bright cherry, and dark ripe plum, followed by layers of black raspberry and hints of violets and oak with traces of cinnamon and Madagascar vanilla.
Since 2000, creating this “blend of field blends” has been our priority in the year after harvest. Like a musical medley (an arrangement of interwoven melodies) each vintage of ACORN Medley is a unique composition. It includes more than 60 grape varieties, reflecting the extraordinary diversity of our Alegría Vineyards. Harvest began September 17, with early-ripening grapes (Blue Portuguese, Liatiko, and numerous others) followed on October 10 and 19 with Syrah, Cinsaut, Mataro, Grenache, and 12 different muscat varieties. Together these three lots created our “base blend”. With each lot, after a 3-day cold soak, we supplemented the native yeast by adding QA23, a Portuguese yeast that releases bound terpenes in aromatic varieties. We barreled the wine at dryness. Ten months later, in August 2019, we tasted through all our 2018 field blends to decide how to build a blend to best showcase the vintage and the diversity of the vineyard. After assembling the blend, we barrel aged it another nine months before bottling.
