Tasting Notes

Striking aromatics of black raspberry and dark cherry with seductive hints of toasty mocha and freshly ground black pepper. A bright, rich entry envelops the palate with juicy loganberry and boysenberry, with traces of blueberry and white pepper. As the wine opens, and the luscious flavors expand and linger, creamy Dutch cocoa, dark roasted coffee, vanilla, and white floral notes emerge.

Winemaker's Notes

Our Heritage Vines field blend comes entirely from the oldest part of Alegría Vineyards, planted in 1890, in well-drained “Positas” river terrace soils, within a mile of the Russian River. Over the years, the winegrowers who preceded us developed our signature field blend that is unique to our vineyard. 2018 was the 28th harvest under our stewardship. It is a labor of love to care for these ancient vines. Each vine requires special hands-on tending. The vines flourished in 2018’s mild weather. The perfect growing season produced a bountiful crop, which we hand-thinned to keep the vines in balance to ensure even ripening and optimal flavors at harvest. After a three-day cold soak to extract color and flavor, we fermented the grapes in small open-top fermenters. We transferred the wine to a carefully selected combination of oak barrels, where it aged sur lies for 18 months to meld and elevate the flavors of this age-worthy field blend.
