Tasting Notes

The rich, dark-toned aromatics offer ripe blackberry, smoky oak, and hints of fresh ground French roast coffee in the nose. The smooth entry, which carries through to the finish, is balanced with bright acidity and gentle toasty oak. This full-flavored wine delivers spiced-laced dark berry and cherry flavors. As the wine nears the long finish, traces of mocha and white pepper appear and linger with the luscious berry essence.

Winemaker's Notes

Our Heritage Vines™ field blend comes entirely from the oldest part of our Alegría Vineyards. The vineyard was planted in 1890, in river terrace soils close to the Russian River, as a mix of Zinfandel and other grape varieties, to be harvested together and co-fermented. The mix of varieties in our unique field blend evolved over the years. Plentiful rain in the winter filled the soil profile, and our 127-year-old vines happily produced luxuriant growth and set a good crop. We thinned the crop to keep the vines in balance and ripen the crop evenly. Harvest was relatively early, due to the hot summer. We fermented the grapes in small open-top fermenters with a combination of native and Rhone yeasts. We barrel-aged the wine sur lies for 14 months in oak barrels to meld and elevate the flavors of this singular, age-worthy Zinfandel field blend.
