2015 Medley® Alegría Vineyards

Tasting Notes

Enjoy deep complex aromatics of ripe dark berries with traces of dark chocolate, orange peel, flowers, and toasty oak. The creamy entry reveals a bright mid-palate overflowing with luscious flavors of dark cherry, and mixed berries accented by warm brown spices. Good tannin-oak structure appears near the finish to support this delicious, balanced blend. Give the wine time to open and allow its finesse and elegance to shine through.

Winemaker Notes

Like a musical medley (an arrangement of interwoven melodies) each vintage of ACORN Medley is a unique composition of more than 60 grape varieties reflecting the extraordinary diversity of our Alegría Vineyards. With each of our other wines, the blend is determined as we pick a mix of grapes, but Medley is our “blend of blends”. Since 2000, assembling it is our first priority in the year after harvest.

After we co-fermented Bill’s “base blend” of Cinsaut, eight different Muscat varieties, Syrah, Mataro, Grenache, Viognier, and numerous rare grapes including Blue Portuguese, Liatiko, and Einset, we aged it in barrel until June 2016. Then we tasted through all our 2015 wines to create this whole vineyard blend.

Our goal is to make a wine that best reflects the vintage and the diversity of the vineyard. There is no formula for this, since we decide based on aroma and flavor and how the grapes “play” together, so the proportions vary with each vintage. After Medley is blended, we age it in barrel for an additional six months before bottling.
