2015 Axiom® Syrah Alegría Vineyards
90+ points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Whispers of toasted oak, sweet tobacco, and kid leather enrich the deep concentrated aromas of vanilla-infused black fruit. The opulent entry offers layers of dark cherry, boysenberry, and black plum laced with a blend of creamy coffee and dark chocolate. Traces of huckleberry and violet appear as the wine lingers on the finish. Fine-grained oak and supple tannins provide a solid yet balanced framework for this complex and elegant cool-climate Syrah.
Our south-facing hillside is a field blend of three Syrah selections inter-planted with Viognier that we harvest together and co-ferment. We call our Syrah “Axiom” (a self-evident truth) because it is so obvious from the wine’s aroma and color why we like following the Côte-Rôtie tradition of co-fermenting Syrah with Viognier.
2015 was a drought year, and the warm dry winter got the vines off to an early start. Cool spring temperatures caused the vines to set a lighter crop, but moderate weather through the growing season gave us evenly ripened grapes.
A three-day cold soak allowed natural enzymes to extract flavors and aroma of the two varieties before fermentation started. Syrah yeast co-fermented the varieties in an open top fermenter.
We aged the 2015 Axiom in a combination of barrels carefully selected from different forests and coopers for their ability to enhance the berry flavors typical of our Russian River Valley Syrah, while adding structure and notes of vanilla and spice. The result is a superb reflection of the vineyard and the vintage.
