Tasting Notes

Intriguing aromas of spicy strawberry and muscat mingle with plum, mixed berries, rose petals, and oak. The smooth entry bursts with a blend of fruit flavors–cherry, boysenberry, mixed berry, and dried fig - with notes of mocha and cinnamon. The finish is edged with bright berry flavors and a lingering core of creamy vanillin oak.

Winemaker Notes

Like a musical medley (an arrangement of interwoven melodies) each vintage of ACORN Medley is a unique composition reflecting the terroir of our Alegría Vineyards and our field-blending tradition. It includes more than 60 grape varieties. Our objective each year is to make a wine the best reflects the complexity of our vineyards and the character of the vintage.

January 2014 saw virtually no rain and 20 days of warmer than average temperatures. That got the vines off to an early start. The growing season was warm, with less fog than usual, and harvest was early as well. Our tradition, since 2000, starts with Bill’s co-fermented “base blend,” which includes Cinsaut, Mataro, Grenache, Viognier, eight different muscat varieties, and rare grapes such as Liatiko, Blue Portuguese, Einsett, and other table grapes. After eight months of barrel aging, we selected specific barrels of our other 2014 wines (each of them a field blend) to blend with the base.

The very small yields of the 2014 base blend grapes limited the total production. This year the Dolcetto stood out and was our starting point in assembling the blend. The new blend aged and melded for an additional seven months in barrel before bottling.
