Tasting Notes

Hints of smoky oak, creamy coffee, vanilla, and leather accentuate rich aromas of ripe blackberry and spicy plum. The entry reveals a wine with layers and depth―wild blackberry, fresh plum, and boysenberry are joined by mocha, toasty oak, and traces of blueberry, orange peel, and white pepper. Soft integrated tannins cradle the lush flavors and enhance each layer as the wine flows across the palate.

Winemaker's Notes

We planted our south-facing hillside as a Syrah-Viognier field blend in 1991, with three clonal selections of Syrah. To make our Axiom, we follow the old Côte-Rôtie tradition of co-fermenting the two varieties, which creates the classic aroma, mouthfeel, and color of this beautiful wine.

Careful canopy management and attention to detail in the vineyard kept the vines in balance and assured even ripening. Consistent, moderate weather through the growing season gave us an early harvest. We co-fermented the grapes with Syrah yeast. To further enhance flavors and add structure and elegance, we aged the wine in a combination of barrels Bill carefully selected from multiple forests and coopers.
