Gold Medal - 2008 Sonoma County Harvest Fair Wine Competition
The seductive, layered aromas and lush flavors in our ’06 Medley strike a harmonious chord in this multi-varietal blend.
Enticing aromas of dark-skinned fruit, toasty oak and black pepper reappear in the richly textured palate along with ripe juicy blackberry and hints of blueberry, citrus, and mocha.
The lively flavors, perfect balance, velvety mouthfeel, and integrated spicy finish create an irresistible wine.
Like a musical medley (an arrangement of interwoven melodies) each vintage of our Medley is a unique vineyard composition representing the essence of Alegría Vineyards and showcasing the unusual diversity of grapes we grow – a blend of field blends. It reflects our terroir, historic plantings, and the 2006 vintage.
For our seventh Medley, Bill created his “base blend” by co-fermenting 18 varieties together. The first picking was predominantly Syrah, Cinsaut, Mourvedre, Viognier, and six distinct red, white, and black Muscats. The second was primarily Zinfandel, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc. After fermentation in small open top fermenters, each with a different yeast, the two lots were pressed into barrels (50% new) for initial aging.
Three months later, Bill and our consulting winemaker, Alison Doran, tasted through each of the ’06 wines and selected three barrels of our field-blended Syrah and four of our field-blended Zinfandel that were then blended with the base blend, and aged for another 15 months, creating this elegant and complex wine.
