Rich, intense berry aromas mix with spicy oak and a hint of leather. Robust blackberry and cherry flavors wrap around creamy oak, mocha, and sweet tobacco. A citrus note joins in at the long, luscious finish. Plush tannins balance the rich flavors and creamy oak to create a delicious, full-bodied, balanced Syrah. Delicious now, it will continue to evolve for three to five years.
Syrah “Axiom” because it is evident from the first sip that this is a classic expression of Syrah. It reflects the foggy mornings and cold nights that allow the grapes to develop deliciously complex spicy berry flavors. 2006 gave us a very cool, even growing season. Aside from ten hot days in July, temperatures for the vintage were cooler than normal. The weather gave our sustainably farmed vines plenty of time to produce a wine of great depth and structure.
Alegría’s south-sloping Syrah vineyard was planted in 1991. It includes five clonal selections of Syrah planted with a small amount of Viognier. The Viognier is co-fermented with the Syrah to enhance aroma and draw out the dark color and flavors of the Syrah. Aging for 18 months, in a carefully selected combination of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels, added structure and notes of vanilla and spice. Our consulting winemaker, Alison Doran, helped us create another multifaceted, full-bodied, delicious Syrah.
