2003 Axiom® Syrah Alegría Vineyards

Gold Medal - 2005 Sonoma County Harvest Fair
Highly Recommended – California Grapevine

Tasting Notes

Luscious aromas of plum and blackberries mingle with spices and smoky oak. Intense, concentrated flavors of ripe blackberry and spicy plum marry with dark-roasted coffee and rich smoky qualities to enhance the character of the wine. A chewy, dense texture, incredible structure, and delicious flavors produce an amazing, well balanced wine. Tuck some away for a few years to enjoy the magic of an aged Syrah.

November 2011 Update: This classic Russian River Valley Syrah has aged gracefully, and is an elegant companion to your meal. The richly layered aromas now include hints of orange essence. The palate is seductive and balanced, with the once chewy texture replaced by a velvety mouthfeel. Since aging, inviting cocoa and mocha flavors appear in the finish. So drinkable now, yet can be laid down for a few more years. You might even decant it to coax even more loveliness from the wine.

Winemaker Notes

An axiom is a “self evident or universally recognized truth.” And it is axiomatic that our Syrah is a classic wine. From the first sip you will know it’s true.

Axiom’s distinctive luscious flavors come from co-fermenting three clonal selections of Syrah with a small amount of Viognier, following the custom of the northern Rhone Valley of France. Complexity also comes from differences in the soil and topography in various parts of Alegría Vineyards and our cool Russian River Valley climate that allows full development of flavors.

Aging in a combination of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels smoothly integrated the varied elements of the wine, which will continue to gain in complexity over the next five to ten years.

The combination of the clonal selections, the vineyard’s microclimate, and the skill and experience of our consulting winemaker, Alison Green Doran, create a rich, full-bodied Syrah.
