2014 Sangiovese Alegría Vineyards

2014 Sangiovese Alegría Vineyards
Tasting Notes

Alluring aromas of toasty oak and roasting coffee mingle with hints of tart cherry, cranberry, and an earthy, mineral essence. From the first sip to the expansive finish, the mouthwatering acidity and bright, lush fruit fills the palate. Delicious black cherry and blackberry are laced with spicy cedar, and merges with creamy mocha at the finish as the flavors linger.

Winemaker's Notes

In 1990, we were delighted to find old Sangiovese vines inter-planted with our Heritage Vines Zinfandel (planted in 1950 by A. Rafanelli). Those vines provided budwood for our hillside planting in 1992, along with 22 additional distinct selections of Sangiovese, and two other traditional Tuscan blending grapes: Canaiolo (for color) and Mammolo (for aroma).

This field blend, our hands-on work in the vineyard, and our cool climate, give the wine an “Italianate” food-friendly balance of tannins and acidity. The 2014, is our 21st Sangiovese vintage.

After a three day cold soak unlocked the grapes’ rich, concentrated flavors and aromas, native yeast started, and Brunello yeast completed, fermentation. Bill selected a combination of oak to further enhance aroma and flavor. 29% new Hungarian barrels added subtle notes of cinnamon, cola, mocha, and toasted walnuts.
