Highly Recommended - Gabe Sasso
Inviting dark aromatics of blackberry, cranberry, and dried cherry fuse with traces of warm brown spices and leather. The smooth entry offers rich deep flavors that flow to the finish where they expand and linger. Mocha, leather, and a hint of orange zest weave through an opulent blend of dark cherry, boysenberry, and blueberry.
Our “Super Tuscan” is a multi-dimensional, co-fermented field blend wine, with the vibrancy of Sangiovese and the structure of Syrah. The cane-pruned vines (planted in 1991 and 1992) grow side-by-side on Acorn Hill at Alegría Vineyards. 2013 was the third consecutive year of drought, and the dry winter produced an early bud-break. Attention to detail in the vineyard (with hand-thinning, leaf removal, etc.) kept the vines in balance, and moderate temperatures ripened the grapes evenly and relatively early. We hand harvested and sorted the grapes early on September 28. Viognier, Canaiolo, and Mammolo were included as part of the inter-planted field blend. We fermented the de-stemmed grapes with a combination of native yeast and a Rhone isolate called D-254. Seventeen months in French oak barrels from Billon and François Frères, and another three years in bottle before release, have integrated the flavors in this age-worthy wine.
